GREEN ROUTES OF THANE== ROUTE 1

Dr. Pejawar showing a n interesting point of a flower on the tree

Ms Megha Karkhanis and Dr. Pejavar, both well-known figures in Botanical Sciences took a very good lead in conducting a leisurely stroll on the periphery of Masunda Lake as well as few green lanes of Thane and introduced various aspects of Thanes treasure trees to the group of about 25 Nature Lovers.

It was a very enthralling experience to know many little-known facts about trees, there uses, their fruits, seeds, their propagation, all from the knowledgeable duo like Dr. Pejavar and Ms Karkhanis.

Hariyali member Mr. Anil Kunte deserves a pat for co-ordination this event.

Keep on looking out for next Route in your papers and on this site

AN APPEAL FOR SPONSORING A CHECK DAM

A TYPICAL CHECK DAM                                   SPONSORSHIPS INVITED FOR HARIYALI’S

RAINWATER HARVESTING AND WATER CONSERVATION ACTIVITIES AT BHAVALE FOREST LAND PROJECT

***

HARIYALI has undertaken the development of about 10 Hectres of almost denuded forest land at village Bhavale, Tal. Bhiwandi, Dist. Thane, off N.H. No. 3, about 25 k.m. from Thane.

Apart from plantation of trees on large scale, this project also involves rainwater harvesting and water conservation activity. Various methods deployed by Hariyali to do so include construction check dams, percolation and storage dams, parallel trenches across the mountain slopes, etc.

There are seven rainwater courses originating from the land and Hariyali has already constructed two check dams and one storage dam on watercourse No. 1 during the year 2009-10. So has it dug 400 parallel trenches all over the land across the mountain slopes.

It is now proposed to construct 20 more check dams and water storage dams across the remaining six more watercourses as per the picture attached herewith. Average cost of each such dam is expected to be around Rs. 15,000/- (Rs. Fifteen thousands only). The dams would be made of alternate layers of stones and loose soil with the dimensions of one meter in height, one meter in width and length varying from eight to fifteen meters.

Check dams are constructed for obstructing the flow and velocity of the rainwater and for conservation of soil. On the other hand, storage dams serve the purpose of storing and retaining the water for a substantial period even after the closure of monsoon. The entire exercise also results in increasing the groundwater level and spreading vegetation and restoring ecology of the entire region.

Apart from participating in the volunteering activity for constructing such dams partially, Hariyali also invites sponsorship from corporate sector for such dams. The cost of sponsoring each dam is placed at Rs. 15,000/- (Rs. Fifteen thousand only). It may be possible to put small sign boards bearing the names of the sponsoring organization/s, if so desired at the respective sites.

The Participating Organizations, CSR Teams and other social service organizations, like Rotaries, Lions, giants, etc are requested and invited to come forward for supporting this noble cause by sponsoring the respective dams.

Prospective Sponsors are also requested to visit the Web Site of Hariyali entitled <hariyalithane.com> for knowing more about its activities and objectives. Address for contact is as mentioned hereinabove.
