BRING A BOTTLE AND SAVE A TREE!

Putting jungles on fire and causing damage to ecology and forest wealth is not uncommon. “Bhavale Forest land” where thousands of volunteers belonging to all age groups planted more than 16,000 trees during the Monsoon of 2008 was no exception. A huge fire took place at this site and the entire land gives the look of a charred mass, as would be apparent from a couple of picture attached herewith.

Not all, however, is lost. Most of the saplings planted are surviving, thanks to several post-plantation protective measures that were taken during last couple of months. The saplings, however, need an act of rejuvenation in the form of water and a pair of caring hands. Hariyali has now started collecting empty water bottles from nature-lovers and well-wishers. Such bottles, filled with water are tied to each of the saplings with a needle-thin prick at the lower end. This enables the water to come out of the bottle drip by drip and reach directly to the roots of the plant. This would most certainly enable the tree to survive. A repeatation of this act once more during next couple of months would enable the tender plant to survive until next monsoon.

An event to organize collection of such bottles and tying those with each of the saplings as shown in the attached pictures is organized for Sunday, 28th December 2008. All nature-lovers and socially conscious citizens are requested to participate in this act of fighting against terrorism imposed on the entire bio diversity and ecology by unsocial elements. Dwelling on the causes of fire is not the objective of this appeal and at the moment we would like to bid farewell to the year 2008 with this act of involvement and participation in this noble cause of safeguarding our environment and fight against the terrorism. You are requested to come equipped with as many 0ne/two/half lt. bottles duly filled with water during the period from 08.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon.

Bhavale plantation site falls on Pise Dam Road, off N.H. No. 3, Bhiwandi By-pass Road, 3 k.m. away from Kalyan-Bhiwandi Highway Jn. A Road Map for those coming by Road is attached. It can also be reached from Kalyan side, taking Kalyan-Padgha Bus from outside Kalyan Station. One has to get down at Sawadh Naka and take a share Auto (Rs. 5/- per person) for Bhavale Hariyali Plantation Site. Those needing a lift from Thane are requested to assemble at Flower Vally Main Gate, Eastern Express Highway, Thane 400601 at 07.00 a.m. Participants wishing to join at this site are requested to contact either of the following persons: –

Shri Punam Singavi 9323291890; Shri Nitin Khare 9969355573;

Shri Madhukar Date 9869825820; Shri J.D. Bahalkar 92221282008.

Should you not be in a position to participate personally, you may collect and forward as many empty water bottles as possible. Sources of collection of such bottles can be your neighbours, hotels and eateries, hospitals, commercial establishments, etc.

PLEASE REMEMBER, EACH ONE OF YOUR BOTTLES CAN SAVE A TENDER TREE FROM DYING AS A RESULT OF AN ACT OF TERRORISM INFLICTED UPON NOT ONLY MANKIND, BUT THE ENTIRE BIODIVERSITY. WE ALL NEED TO FIGHT IT TOGETHER.
